Rocky (Mahakshay Chakraborty) is a rowdy goon lives in Mumbai, so the police are after him always. But a sudden turn of events makes him land in Kashmir, where he meets a Kolkata girl Nandini (Pooja Bose) and falls in love with her. Once back in Kolkata, later Rocky learns that Nandini loves a minister's son, Avik, then a murder happens which forms the climax.

Abhishikta (Arunima) comes to Santiniketan from Kolkata to be a part of Basanta Utsav, where she meets Neel ( Priyam), a budding sculptor and a student at the university. Neel offers to be Abhishikta's guide during her stay in the town. Neel is clueless about her real identity. Over the next three days, Neel explores his love for her.


Trina (PiyaliMunshi) is a college student who gets involved in a relationship with a married man, Prof Anargha (PijushGanguly). Trina and Anargha had planned the trip to Santiniketan so that they could spend some time together during Holi. But during the course of the film, Trina realizes that Anargha wants to get physically intimate with her and has no emotional attachment whatsoever. Trina is heartbroken when she sees Anargha with his wife, Sumitra (June) at the DolUtsav.


The reason for Lina's (LaboniSarkar) visit to Santiniketan is to meet her old friend. On reaching there, she learns from an elderly Prof Abinash that her friend has left the town years ago. However, Lina and Abinash bond instantly. He is in for a shock when Lina tells him that she is suffering from cancer.


TV reporter Ritrin (RhitabrataBhattacharya) camps at Santiniketan to cover BasantaUtsav. There he meets Abirlal (Subrat), a DVD shop owner, who seeks Ritrin's help to solve the murder mystery of his neighbour's wife ( Mousumi), whom he was in love with. Ritrin assures to help him once he is done with the assignment at hand. Then, something happens and Ritrin gets upset. But the show must go on...


The stories might seem interesting on paper, but when translated on screen, come across as only an extension of a 'feature story', as we call it — with 'human interest angle' in place. Sadly, the film doesn't entertain. Extremely low on content, most of the actors disappoint in the acting department with their one-dimensional portrayal, except for maybe PradipMukherjee and Subrat, who are natural in their body language and expressions.


Mousumi is fairly okay while Arunima, despite her accent and affectations a la Sushmita Sen, is tolerable. Piyali and Pijush's episode is melodramatic and gets irritating after a point. June looks pretty but could have done better as Pijush's much-neglected wife. You expect a lot more from an accomplished actor like Pijush, but here, his half-hearted performance is a let down. For all her raving and ranting, Piyali, with her amateurish acting, fails to impress. Considering the kind of experience Rhitabrata has in the audio-visual medium, he appears visibly conscious in front of the camera. It is high time Priyam should concentrate on his diction. The manner in which he says 'I love you' to Arunima, sounds more comical than emotional.

Before we proceed to the review, a humble request by the unfortunate soul that the reviewer is: this movie is not to be confused as the Bangla remake of the Salman-Bebo starrer Bolly blockbuster, Bodyguard. Also, if you happen to be a martial arts practioner, be prepared to first empty your brain, unlearn those kicks, punches and blocks you have learned. Pity if you are a black belt!

Newbie Pratik is Anol and all he's capable of is bashing up baddies or spending the rest of his waking hours in bed, sleeping. But that is not to undermine his supernatural ability - uttering unintelligible, gagging noises when applying the roundhouse kick on para goons. It goes something like this, "Ugghhhugghh".

Ridhima plays his lady love, Aankhi, whose main agenda, apart from driving down the New Town highway, bestie in tow, to the mall to do some shopping is to break out into a cacophonous giggle. While viewers wait patiently for her to be silent, a note on the hapless director, Haranath Chakraborty. Famed for churning out Tolly potboilers, Haranath surprised movie buffs with his screen adaptation of Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay's spook tale, Chayamoy. The movie garnered good reviews and had a grand opening at one of the prestigious theatres in the city. The case with Amar Bodyguard is different. It seems like Haranath had taken a break from filmmaking and had nothing to do when the idea of making such a classic fail struck him. The telltale signs are scattered throughout the film - borrowed footages, bad production quality, horrendous wardrobe and a lame storyline. But we digress...

So when Anol is not going "Ugghhhugghh" and Aankhi is not doing "Khikkhikkhik", the two disappear into the clouds of a hill station and do things that lovers do! What's more, they even take off to Goa and do a Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi ishtyle dance competition. But that's where their romance comes to a screeching halt. Much like the police officer's (Tapas Paul) car at regular intervals throughout the film. More on that later.

Haranath's attempt is sincere but lacks conviction. He's tried to portray all that plagues the average Indian society - apathy towards the nation, safety of women and the pangs of unemployment (There's a scene where Anol's dad rues, "Chakrir bajar ta khubi kharap"). It's his cast and crew that lets him down. No doubt the movie had a dated release (We hear it was waiting in the wings for 2 years). As for the cast, Ridhima has moved on to more urban projects, the youth-centric flick Rangmilanti being one of them. The only refreshing quality about her was her fab bod. She was clad mostly in minis, hot pants and spaghettis and we won't mince our words when we say it was delightful to experience leg show sans the cellulite!

Pratik? No sign of him so far so we'll move on to the big star of the movie - Tapas Paul who plays a respectable police officer with an irritating sidekick. But his role stuck to more dialoguebaji than real action. Always on time to arrive at the crime scene - precisely to sum up the moral and probable motive of the crime since the culprit almost always escapes before Mr 'Dependable' reaches. Here's a howler: after Aankhi's pad has been ransacked by a masked intruder, here's what our respectable police officer had to say, "Prathomic bhabe mone hochhe......... Eta ekta MYSTERIOUS case..."

The film, as a faithful adaptation of Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay's story Chayamoy, is a collection of all things our childhood was made of. If you are a Shirshendu-holic, then you must be familiar with his gang of friendly ghosts. They usually help those in need. They are also very fond of kids and can go to any length to help the neglected, rejected and underdogs of the society. Chayamoy is also a story of such a ghost, whose honest meddling in others' lives changes the fates of Shimultala's people.

As the film starts, Shimultala, which looks like a normal village from outside, reveals a mixed bag of colourful characters — there's a village money monger Gagan (played with elan by Dipankar De), who exploits the poor villagers; a 93-year-old man, who actually looks forty; a fraud kapalik, who dreams of borrowing enough money from people so that he can build Ma Kali's than in bot-tala and have half liter of milk every day; a little boy who enjoys life even in extreme poverty; a thief, who possesses a bagful of gold coins and a ghost, who knows all the secrets. Like all thrillers we loved as a child, there's also a story of hidden treasures and unfulfilled dreams. It's good that director Haranath Chakraborty didn't take any unnecessary detours and decided to stick to the original plot. For that reason, the film he made is simple yet heart-warming. He was also extremely astute while deciding on the cast. As it's the ensemble cast of brilliant actors that ultimately make the film special. Every single one of them — be it Paran Bandopadhyay as the 93-year-old thakurda, Sudip Mukherjee as Gagan's hired goon with a heart of gold, Sabyasachi Mukherjee as the bondhu-bhoot or his talented son, Gaurav, as the thief-cum-hero of the film — play their individual roles as if they are actual residents of that village. Even the kid who plays Alankar is completely natural. Their performances are complemented by Debojyoti Mishra's music. Though, sometimes, it has uncanny similarities with that of Ray's, his background score helps to make the comic situations come alive. The director also brought back some veteran actors on screen after a long time. For that he deserves a special thanks. But Rituparna Sengupta's cameo as a courtesan of Gagan's fantasy and some childish special effects used in the film, fell short of expectations. The film also could have done with better editing.

Chayamoy can easily be termed as a children's film. However, as Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay's stories for children are enjoyed by Bengali readers, irrespective of age. Similarly this film also has the capacity to capture all hearts.
